The Schechen Peat Shed, a project in collaboration with Guntram Jankowski, is now documented on Opalis – a European platform for the reuse of materials in the construction industry. The article was written as part of a study project by a student at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium).

The original peat barn dates from the 19th century and was originally located in Kolbermoor. In 2006, 90 m³ of spruce timber framework was dismantled and stored. Rebuilt at its new location in Schechen, the building combines the historic timber structure with modern standards: clay plaster and clay bricks naturally regulate the indoor climate. The adaptation and repurposing of this historic building demonstrates the sustainability of historic timber structures.

Opalis documents projects, sources of materials and reuse suppliers. The online-platform aims to promote the reuse of materials in new-build and existing building projects.
