The Friedenau Community School in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district is located on Rubensstraße, at the corner of Begasstraße. In order to meet current and projected demand for classrooms, a temporary building is to be constructed here. Construction work began at the end of 2025 on a part of the school grounds that was previously used as a soccer field. A three-story flat-roofed building is being constructed using prefabricated timber panel construction.
“Das fliegende Klassenzimmer 2.0” (The Flying Classroom 2.0) is planned as a free-standing, temporary extension to the existing school and serves as a pilot project for further buildings of this type. A modular structure with flexible partition rooms will help to ensure that this type of building can be realized particularly quickly at other school locations in the future, using pre-tested, module-based planning documents.
Given the planned replication, the extensive use of renewable raw materials in the building takes on particular significance. At the same time, the prototype on Rubensstraße is being used to test various approaches, such as ensuring optimal ventilation of the rooms while minimizing the use of mechanical systems. In view of the temporary nature of the interim building, the design also placed special emphasis on a circular construction approach.
