The “Reallabor Lab B(e) Ware” develops planning and construction processes centered around reused building materials, aiming to bridge the gap between current research and established construction practices. It considers the entire value chain—from the assessment, recovery, and processing of building materials to the development of infrastructural and regulatory frameworks for scalable reuse.
Following an initial focus on construction timber during the concept phase, the “B(e) Ware” model is now being extended to other material groups. To this end, suitable recovery sites are identified within the established network. Existing materials are located, assessed, and carefully recovered with minimal damage, then stored at a central warehouse in Spandau. There, they are prepared for further processing and reuse in load-bearing structures.
Materials from sites from across Berlin are incorporated into new construction and renovation projects in various neighborhoods of the city, including a construction project in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf (Museum Pavilion on the TU Berlin campus), a construction project in Treptow-Köpenick (Water Rescue Station in Friedrichshagen), and a construction project in Lichtenberg (a new workshop building for the “Jugendbauhütte” by the German Foundation for Monument Protection). Additional building sites and projects will be located during the concept phase.
Through these projects, “B(e) Ware” is testing a concept for the simplified fabrication of sophisticated load-bearing structures using locally sourced secondary materials – while promoting circular value chains in the construction sector.
