GROUND-BREAKING CEREMONY AT ELLENER HOF

At the beginning of march, the ground-breaking ceremony for two projects on construction site five of the Ellener Hof village in Bremen took place. As part of the newly developed social-ecological model district, ZRS Architekten Ingenieure are planning two timber buildings, one residential building with a kindergarten, as well as one building for the daycare center. 9 barrier-free and wheelchair accessible apartments are created, as well as new rooms for approx. 120 children in 7 groups of the AWO kindergarten “Am Hallacker”. Both buildings are positioned in a way, that the old trees on the site are preserved and the area can be used as outdoor space for the children.

In addition to the hybrid use, the timber buildings are also innovative in terms of the supporting structure and the materials used. The stiffening core, containing the stairs as well as an elevator, in the 5-storey residential and daycare building is constructed in solid wood using visible cross-laminated-timber.

It was possible to completely abstain fossil insulating materials by installing foam glass panels under the concrete base and rigid insulation boards made from natural wood fibres on the extensively green roofs. The use of reinforced concrete was reduced to a minimum in the area of the floor slabs and the wood-concrete composite ceilings in the 5-storey, hybrid building. The outer walls are highly thermal-insulating using cellulose insulation, the facade is planned as a vertically structured, grey wooden cladding with light colored wooden windows. The kindergarten corresponds to the requirements for KfW 55 non-residential buildings, the apartments the requirements for KfW 40 for residential buildings.

The use and visibility of natural building materials in the interior and exterior, creates a healthy and pleasant environment in both the daycare and the apartments.

Until the new kindergarten is completed, the children are accommodated in the old existing building nearby and can follow the construction work from the start. Even more: The children were invited to take the spade together with the Senator for Education and Children Dr. Claudia Bogedan and André Vater, CEO of the Bremer Heimstiftung.
