Kick-off Living Lab B(e)-Ware

In 2023, the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises issued a call for proposals to support business-oriented living labs. Out of the submitted concepts, three have now been selected for funding — among them the project B(e)-Ware, initiated by the Natural Building Lab at TU Berlin, with ZRS as a research partner.

The living lab aims to reintegrate locally sourced, reclaimed construction materials — such as timber beams and steel girders — into the value chain of the building sector. The concept will be implemented for the first time in three construction projects in Berlin: the museum pavilion on the Charlottenburg campus of TU Berlin, the water rescue station at Müggelsee, and a workshop building of the “Jugendbauhütte” of the German Foundation for Monument Protection. ZRS is involved in the planning of all three projects. In addition to developing the currently lacking infrastructure for processing reused materials, the laboratory will focus on deriving planning and regulatory approaches to simplify the use of reclaimed materials in the construction sector.
